When you get up in the 3s or early 4s you have to have stick to a pretty strict bedtime. Even when there are dinners, award shows, or, like last night, a sporting event that you'd like to stay up and be part of. Being from Western NY and cheering on The Bills for 63+ years is exciting/challenging/frustrating. So when I went to bed last night with the Bills up by one point, I thought, maybe this time! Who knows?
I hate to say, but maybe going to bed and missing the fourth quarter I jinxed the whole thing. Ugh! It's probably totally my fault that when I woke up this morning and looked at the score, I was, once again, like everyone living in or from Buffalo and it's environs, devastated. I've already received a text from my brother Brooks who still lives there that the city is weeping. And I sure wouldn't want to be in Rockstar and Sarah's house this morning.
It's funny how sports - football and futbol in particular cause people such elation and such pain. I'm guessing that the emotional commitment fans have to their teams is why these players get paid so much money. It means something. It gets people out of their routine and their own personal stories and puts them into a larger, collective story. I think ultimately, that's why sports exist as a pastime. But sadly, in the end, there is only one winner. It can never end with both sides being happy. Truly, it's not the end of the world. And right now there are plenty other things that are more "end-of-the-world(ish)." But I'm sorry for my friends and family at home. I'm sorry for Rockstar, who spends so much energy hoping/wishing/and cheering on his team. And I know that my mom, somewhere up there in heaven, is shedding a tear or two for her beloved Bills.
On a happier note. On the stove I have an Irish Pork and Potato Soup made with Guinness Braised Pork. What the F? I'm also doing Chicken Matzo Ball because, as it happens there is no catering on the board and someone at MetroFresh Uptown requested it.
